We typically combine line editing and copy editing under a single service since the two are somewhat related. This is a two-step process where line editing will take place first, then conclude with copy editing.
Line editing involves checking a manuscript for internal consistency in both events and word use (e.g. “Heroine had blonde hair in chapter one, but she’s a brunette in chapter fifteen”; “Your heroine uses ‘sir’ at some points and ‘Sir’ at others.”). Deliverable for line editing will be in-manuscript comments in a Word document.
Copy editing addresses basic grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation, homonyms, typos, etc. Deliverable for copy editing will be in-manuscript corrections in a Word document utilizing Track Changes. Client will have final say as to whether they choose to Accept or Reject each change/correction noted in the manuscript.
