Book Review: The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty

December 1, 2013 By Trent Evans

Review: The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty, by Anne Rice
(writing as A.N. Roquelaure)

I’ve read this book multiple times over the past twenty years. I reread it recently in order to prepare this review, and it’s taken me a few days to crystallize my thoughts about this book. First, I want to remark on how well it’s held up in the three decades (!) since its release. The writing is still as fresh and accessible (and HOT) as it was the first time I cracked it open as a teenager in that crowded B Dalton all those years ago. The description, the emotion, and the lust still jump off the page. It still disturbs and fascinates in equal measure. It’s a remarkable, incredible book … but it’s definitely not for everyone. Not by a long shot.

30 Days of Kink – Day 10

July 17, 2012 By Trent Evans

Day 10: What are your hard limits?

When I first read this title, I thought to myself  “This is going to be a reaallly short blog post.” So, I had to think about it – for days. After those solemn hours of contemplation I came to a realization…

It’s still going to be a short list:)

I looked through the rest of the questions for 30 Days of Kink, and I don’t see anything for soft limits – so I’ll include some of those too. The list below is what I would or would not be prepared to give, not receive. Just in case there is any confusion:)

I’ll start with differentiating between hard limits and soft limits (for me):

Soft Limit= something I wouldn’t normally do, but might do under certain, very specific conditions.

Hard Limit = something I would not do under any circumstances.

HUGE DISCLAIMER – just because these are my limits, doesn’t mean I am  rendering judgement on others’ kinks (except, obviously, for the kids and animals; those are universal no-nos.)

Here is my list:

  • “Golden showers”/pee – in fiction this can be hot – if written well. Aran Ashe and William Avon do it particularly well. Just not sure it’s something I could do IRL…maybe someday.
  • Blood Play – There is one aspect of blood play that’s a possible one for me: whipping or caning to the blood. If I did it, it would only ever be to the buttocks; nowhere else is it safe IMO (though there are others who say upper back is fine too; I disagree with them). Again, in fiction this can be hot if done right, and in limited doses. IRL? I just don’t have enough practice with whips and canes for it to be safe. Another one that’s a “maybe someday”.
Hard Limits
  • No children or anyone under 18 – no exceptions. This should go without saying.
  • No scat
  • No animals
  • No extreme breathplay (e.g. until unconsciousness). A hand around her throat to assert ownership of my slave? Hell yes. A collar that’s a little snug so that she feels a constant physical reminder of her being owned, controlled? Yes indeed. Leashes? Fuck yes. But despite my weird penchant for enjoying wrestling with and physically taking down a woman, I don’t want to choke her out.
  • Blood play (specifically, cutting) – It’s not something I would ever feel safe doing. Sure, there are some very experienced players who love this, and can do it safely. I’m just not one of them. Oddly enough fantasy author Jacqueline Carey handles cutting VERY well, and she actually makes it scorching hot. If you haven’t read her Kushiel series, you’re missing out.
  • Branding – In fiction it can be so fucking hot, in a very disturbing way. See The Story of O, or the art of Loic Dubigeon I linked to in my Day 8 post for examples of what I mean. However, IRL it’s a bridge too far for me. Unlike tattoos which are (painfully) reversible, branding is – short of skin grafting – not. Best left to fantasy, at least for me.
  • Dishonesty – Don’t roll your eyes. I’m serious. What I mean is a sub not communicating her needs  – which includes HER limits. Don’t try something just because you think he’ll like it, or he tells you to. This is not only for your safety. It’s for mine, too. No Dom/Master/Sadist worth a squirt of piss wants to unintentionally bring something up from a sub’s past or trigger a panic attack – or worse. Communicate, communicate, communicate. If your Dom doesn’t want to communicate, then you’re in danger. Tell him to fuck off, safeword, call a monitor, whatever you need to do. Just don’t go any further. <end rant>
There, see? Not a long list at all. I’m sure I’ve forgotten some things, but I think this covers the lion’s share of my limits.
Until Day 11!
Trent

30 Days of Kink – Day 8

July 4, 2012 By Trent Evans

Day 8: Post a kinky image you find erotic.

So let me start off by saying…I’m a nerd. I actually like BDSM art more than I like the photography. That’s not to say I don’t appreciate photos (I love them), but I have always been drawn :::groan::: to BDSM art. So, rather than get myself into trouble by posting an image that’s still under copyright, I will just post some links here to stuff that I like. Maybe the readers of this blog will discover something they like too!

Paolo Eleuteri Serpieri Ahh Serpieri, the master. While he does comparatively little BDSM per se (only a few of his paintings and the occasional scene in his comics depict it), one look at his famous heroine will tell you why he is beloved by spankos and pervs like me the world over. Druuna Oh Druuna! We love her, and thank the sweet Lord, Serpieri shares her with us:) This man knows what the terms ‘voluptuous’, ‘hourglass figure’ and ‘well-endowed’ actually mean. His art speaks to men who like to spank. I can’t put it more clearly than that! I’ve linked to what IMO is his best work (Creatura), but there is a lot more of it out there – some of it even more hardcore. Pick it up while you can because it seems to go in and out of print.

Loic Dubigeon

Quite simply the most evocative, erotic BDSM art I’ve ever seen. Have you ever read The Story Of O? Well, his art is one vision of what that story might look like. His work is full of dominance and submission; pain and pleasure; Masters and slaves; and tearful surrender. Oh, and it’s got plenty of whipping, caning, cropping and fucking too! Dubigeon was incredible. His works are mostly out of print, but can still be found in the used markets. If you find them, snap them up, for they are destined to be classics. I’ve linked to one of the few still available on Amazon.

Michael Manning

Supremely talented, visionary artist. I’m not even sure he’s human:) He loves to push buttons, and there is enough in his works to offend just about anybody and everyone. I don’t even know how to describe it. All I can say is…it’s rad.

Rebecca

Known primarily for her Housewives at Play comix series. Her work is mainly F/F, but she also does quite a bit of M/F work too.  Rebecca is amazing. If you like lesbians, some diabolical F/F BDSM, and MILFS, you can do no better than Rebecca. She does mostly black and white, but her Hot Moms stuff (shown above) is in full color – and it’s smoking hot. Very talented, very profific, very perverted. What’s not to love? Her graphic albums and comix published through Eros Comix are of high quality (I own several of them). Her website is one of the best deals on the internet for depraved art. I highly recommend it.

Hanz Kovacq (aka Bernard Duffossé) – http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beautes-Dociles-Kovacq/dp/2917456078/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1341435989&sr=8-4) Now, before some of you freak, let me be very clear here. I am not advocating everything in this man’s work (some of the themes he occasionally explores happen to be ince$t and some “monster sex”, neither of which are my thing). What I AM saying is that he is a mad genius of an artist;  a man with a compelling, one-of-a kind style,  impressive technical skills and most of all, a very, very dirty mind. I love him. Lots of whips, chains, ropes, gags, blindfolds and some breathtakingly amoral characters. Oh and his work is chock full of hardcore sex. Sadly, it appears all of his stuff is out of print, but if you stumble across any of it on Ebay, BUY it. You won’t regret it – even if you don’t speak French.

Dave Annis

I’ve never encountered an artist that was so fucking funny. You’ll be turned on and laughing out loud as you peruse his art. Some of his ongoing themes are pure genius! He’s an artist who understands the difference between titillation and eroticism – and knows how to use both. On top of that, the guy is a good writer with a twisted and wicked sense of humor. There is NOBODY else out there like him. His website is very easy to navigate, and is an outstanding value for the money.

***

I’m sure I am leaving out some great artists, and if so, I will post them as they come to me. I hope this has been at least interesting and informative. What do you think? Who are your favorite BDSM artists? If you have other artists you like, please feel free to let me know in the comments or send me an e-mail. Always looking to peep new stuff!

Until Day 9!
